With Melvitto, I’ve Learnt Less Is More.

Melvitto

Melvitto is a Nigerian producer, songwriter, and sound engineer. Mostly working behind the scenes, he features his own vocals from time to time, but I think it’s safe to say that he’s more interested in making the sounds happen. He is the magician behind the boards.

I found him through his 2019 single “Gentility”, which featured Wande Coal’s vocals and it was pure fire. What makes him distinct is the simplicity in his production. I used to consider this simplicity as basic. I mean, why would a producer be content to go with calm, soft tones, when he could flex all his skills by stacking as many layers and levels onto his production? However, the more I got into his music, the more I thoroughly enjoyed each body of work he put out there. Then it finally hit me, and I realised his production emphasised the vocals whilst managing to leave room for a keen ear to savour beats. This is why his simplicity appealed to me, even before I came to that realisation.

Melvitto started his music career in 2017 with the EP, Soon, featuring Nonso Amadi, Wande Coal, Tjan, and his usual partner in magic, Gabzy. Melvitto and Gabzy’s collaboration on this project gave birth to Stay; my personal favorite on the EP.

Melvitto currently has three EPs and three singles to his credit namely (in order of production dates): Soon, Thenightisyoung, and Summers. While he often features other artistes on his work as vocalists, Summers is different from the conventional, and judging by what I heard, his calm, soothing vibes are not restricted to just his production – his voice gives the same effect.

While he is majorly a producer, Melvitto also has his own vocal prowess, and he shows us this in his 2019 single, “Mistakes”; a song that expresses a hurt lover’s disappointment at what becomes of the bond they shared with their partner. He goes further with the Summers EP, also from 2019. Quick side note, his work rate in 2019 is nothing short of incredible and impressive, judging by the number and quality of work he put out.

His most widely recognized piece is “Wait For You”, from the EP, Thenightisyoung, with Oxlade on vocals. There’s, in fact, a video (which I love) of USA’s Quavo and Saweetie giving us casual couple goals content, with this piece playing in the background.

One theme that is consistent in Melvitto’s productions is that they often involve the expression of love, feelings, and romance, which makes sense since his productions are anything but violent and harsh. Their softness and simplicity really sets the pace for what romance is about in most cases.

Listening to Melvitto through the years has also led me to discover some great artistes he has collaborated with, such as Krisirie, Gabzy and Ayo Jay.

Melvitto also does production for other artistes. Did you know that Wande Coal’s single, Again, was produced by Melvitto? I had a feeling it was him the first time I heard the track, so you can imagine my delight when I checked and it really was him! All of this brings me here.

A lot of people who know Melvitto may think his a lot of his productions are similar. The fact that he has a consistent calmness which he incorporates into his flow (if I do say so myself) makes all the vocal work in the music he produces stand out, and this is not a bad thing at all, in my opinion. I think that’s him carving a niche for himself and I’m excited to see where his career goes. Let’s say I’m rooting for him big time. What do you think of his music?

If you’re new to him, you should check out his music, and root for him too.
